Interestingly, the presence & status of women in paid employment has improved dramatically over the last half century. However, the progression of professional women into positions of leadership has been slow. A study by Australian diversity & productivity researcher Conrad Liveris, analysed the gender composition in ASX200 roles, which included 200 chief executives & 200 chairs, finding women only hold 23 of these positions; the remaining 377 positions held by men. Women continue to find it more difficult to rise to positions of leadership in environments that are highly male-dominated, irrespective of the sector of employment.
The latest update from private sector employer reports provided to Australia's Workplace Gender Equality Agency (which covers more than 12,000 employers/4 million employees across Australia), found that despite women making up half of the nation's workforce, they still earn substantially less than men at every level; $27,000 less than their male counterpart.
